В буклете к альбому написано: «Реквием по послевоенной мечте, написанный Роджером Уотерсом, исполненный группой Пинк Флойд. Для Эрика Флетчера Уотерса 1913-1944» Первоначально планировалось, что «The Final Cut» станет саундтреком фильма «The Wall», но он вышел как антивоенный альбом Роджера Уотерса. Из-за конфликтов между Уотерсом и Ричардом Райтом, начавшихся ещё при работе над альбомом «The Wall», альбом «The Final Cut» стал единственным, в записи которого Райт не принимал участия.
